The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its November estimates (as on 30th November 2012) of the cotton crop for the season 2012-13. CAI has placed the cotton crop for the season 2012-13 at 352.00 lakh bales. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2012-13 estimated the total cotton supply at 417.21 lakh bales while the domestic consumption is estimated at 266.00 lakh bales, thus leaving an available surplus of 151.21 lakh bales. The arrivals as on 30th November 2012 are placed at 43.50 lakh bales. A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2012-13 and the corresponding data for the previous season 2011-12 is given below.
The cotton crop continues to look promising this year also despite the reduction in cotton acreage.
It is heartening to note that the Government has geared up to meet the challenge of a big minimum support price operation. The burden of the Government can however be drastically reduced if the exports are expedited by continuing to provide a facilitative and export friendly policy. In this regard, the Association had requested the Government to remove minor irritants in the form of a ceiling of 10000 bales up to which an exporter can apply for registration at a time and the registration of cotton exports. We are thankful to the Government to have increased the ceiling to 30,000 bales. The Association will continue to make efforts to do away with the ceiling and registration of cotton exports altogether.
