The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its May Estimates (as on 31st May 2010) of the Cotton Crop for the season 2009-10. CAI estimated the Cotton Crop for the new season at 305.50 lakh bales which is about 1.5 lakh bales more than the last month’s estimate. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by CAI for the year 2009-10, estimated the total cotton supply at 387.00 lakh bales, while the domestic consumption was retained at 250.00 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 137.00 lakh bales. The estimated cotton exports during 2009-10 season are placed at 82.00 lakh bales. A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2009-10 and the corresponding data for the previous season 2008-09 is given below.
With the estimated exports of 82 lakh bales, the carry over stock at the end of the season will be at 55 lakh bales.
The Association notes with great disappointment that the Government has brought raw cotton exports under a licensing regime. It urges the Government to move raw cotton exports back to the “Free List”. In the meanwhile, the Association also requests to the Government to issue licences to cotton exporters in respect of all export contracts which were duly registered with the office of the Textile Commissioner before 19th April 2010.
