The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its March Estimates (as on 31st March 2010) of the Cotton Crop for the season 2009-10. CAI estimated the Cotton Crop for the new season at 301.75 lakh bales. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2009-10, estimated the total cotton supply at 383.25 lakh bales, while the domestic consumption was estimated at 250.00 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 133.25 lakh bales. The CAI estimated the cotton exports during 2009-10 season at 72.00 lakh bales. A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2009-10 is given below.
The arrivals as of 31st March 2010 constitute approximately 87% of the expected crop.
Cotton prices continue to remain firm due to high international prices and better realization by spinners for their yarns.
Indian cotton exports have witnessed a healthy trend and appear to have recovered from last year’s poor performance. It is desirable that all segments including the Government continue to support cotton exports to maintain the performance and in order to further establish Indian cotton with spinners around the world.
