Akola Cotton Season Delayed by Supply Woes
Kharif Season : With the Kharif sowing season approaching, farmers in Akola district are facing a huge shortage of cotton seeds along with DAP fertilizer. Farmers are in a dilemma due to the supply being much less than the demand. If the stock is not available on time, there is a possibility of delay in sowing and adverse effect on production. (Kharif Season)
As the sowing time of Kharif season approaches, there is a shortage of the most demanded cotton seeds and 'DAP' fertilizer in the district. This situation is creating a big obstacle in the preparation of thousands of farmers. (Kharif Season)
Due to inadequate stock of seeds and fertilizers, the concern of farmers preparing for the Kharif season has increased significantly. If the government and fertilizer manufacturing companies do not meet the demand on time, then there is a possibility of delay in sowing. This may also affect the production, market price and income of farmers in the upcoming season. (Kharif Season)
Current status of seed and fertilizer stock
Demand for cotton seed: 3 lakh packets
Availability (till June 7): Only 1,12,000 packets
Currently available: Only 1,000 packets
It is not clear yet when the seed stock will be available. Will the sowing date have to be postponed till the stock is available as per the demand? This has worried the local farmers.
Status of 'DAP' fertilizer supply
Demand: 25 thousand metric tons
Availability (current): 4 thousand metric tons
Current direct stock: only 1,300 metric tons
Will the difficulties of farmers increase?
* Risk of delayed sowing
* Impact on cotton production
* Potential risk of black marketing
* Economic impact due to low production
Follow-up action is being taken with the Agriculture Commissionerate as well as the concerned company to ensure the supply of cotton seed and DAP fertilizer, which are most in demand in the district. (Source: www.smartinfoindia.com)
