The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its July estimates (as on 31st July 2010) of the cotton crop for the season 2009-10. CAI has placed the cotton crop for the season 2009-10 at 307.50 lakh bales which is 2 lakh bales more than the estimation made last month. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2009-10 estimated the total cotton supply at 386 lakh bales while the domestic consumption is estimated at 250 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 136 lakh bales. The CAI has estimated the cotton export during 2009-10 crop season at 83 lakh bales which leaves a carry over stock at 53 lakh bales at the end of the season. The arrivals as on 31st July 2010 are placed 303 lakh bales.
Considering the weather conditions which have been very good so far, CAI estimates about 10% increase in the total acreage. Further, with the improved Bt. Technology, yield is also expected to go up by about 5%.
All these facts put together point to a minimum crop of about 337 lakh bales. However, if similar favourable conditions continue, the cotton crop during season 2010-11 could reach even upto 350 lakh bales. Along with the current carry over of about 54.5 lakh bales and a crop of 337 lakh bales and imports of about 7 lakh bales, total availability of cotton in the Country during the crop year 2010-11 would be about 396.5 lakh bales. This is a very comfortable position for ensuing cotton season.
