The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its April Estimates (as on 30th April 2010) of the Cotton Crop for the season 2009-10. CAI estimated the Cotton Crop for the new season at 304.00 lakh bales. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2009-10, estimated the total cotton supply at 386.50 lakh bales, while the domestic consumption was estimated at 250.00 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 136.50 lakh bales. The CAI estimated the cotton exports during 2009-10 season at 83.00 lakh bales. A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2009-10 is given below.
The arrivals as of 30th April 2010 are placed at 284.00 lakh bales which constitute approximately 93.5% of the expected crop. The positive trend of arrivals so far is sufficiently indicative of the fact that the crop for the current season is set to cross 300 lakh bales. Further, even with the estimated exports of 83 lakh bales, the carry over stock at the end of the season is likely to be at 53.5 lakh bales.
The recent Government measures to impose duty on export of cotton and suspension of cotton exports have seriously affected the entire Indian cotton sector. These measures need to be immediately reviewed by the Government to protect the interests of the farmers as also India’s image and reputation as a reliable supplier of quality cotton to the global cotton markets.
Cotton exporters with unfulfilled contracts because of suspension of exports are likely to face bilateral disputes, claims and arbitrations.
